Learnership are programs that are mostly based on work and help learners to get an NQF registered qualification. These programs mainly favor those with disabilities. These programs help to train people for occupations such as hairdressing, engineering as well as project management. These programs were introduced by the government in order to help the disabled to gain skills and workplace experience which will help them get great employment opportunities. These programs help to enhance training and education access for participants as they enable one to work on their careers while studying as well. Learnership programs were mainly started in order to fill the existing gap between the education system and training required in order for learners to fulfill the needs of the labor market.

These programs are very beneficial as they help to address challenges such as employment, unequal training and education opportunities. These programs have also helped to solve issues pertaining unemployment and shortage of skills in the country. For one to graduate in this program, they need to do a course which involves both practical and their work at the provided workplace. In a learnership program, there are different parties involved which includes the employer who offers the training, the learner as well as training provider in charge of the theoretical part. Young people who are done with school and training institutions can enroll for these programs. One simply has to be above 16 and below 35 years of age in order to be eligible for the program.

The only way those who are unemployed can participate in the program is if there is a willing employer in the field willing to provide working and training experience. There is usually a contract that is binding to the employer, trainer and learner as well. In the contract, there are terms that require the learner to be taken in by the employer within the duration of the learnership program. Depending on the skills of the learner, the employer can choose to continue employing them after the program is over or not.
