How did you arrive up with the notion for the review?
There is a great deal of previous operate showing that explicit statements about gender shape people’s stereotypes. Was not there also another measure you seemed at?
The 2nd locating is that languages vary in the extent to which they use various words and phrases to describe persons of various genders in professions. So in English, we do this with “waiter” and “waitress” to describe persons of various genders. What we identified was that languages that make additional of all those form of gender distinctions in occupations had been additional most likely to have speakers with a more powerful gender stereotype, as calculated by the IAT.
Do not some languages have these distinctions crafted into their grammar?

Some of your findings about gender stereotypes experienced been examined in English in advance of, hadn’t they?
What I would say is that our contribution below is to check out this issue cross-linguistically and to immediately examine the toughness of the psychological gender bias to the toughness of the statistical bias in language—the phrase designs that reveal gender bias. What we did was present that there’s a systematic romance amongst the toughness of all those two types of biases.
Just one of the factors you make is that additional operate will be required to prove a trigger-and-effect romance amongst languages and gender stereotypes. Can you speak about that?
I imagine this is really significant. All of our operate is correlational, and we really really do not have powerful evidence for a causal assert. So I could imagine a couple strategies that we can get more powerful causal evidence. Just one would be to search at this longitudinally to find a way to measure bias and language over time—say, over the previous 100 years. Does transform in the toughness of language bias predict afterwards transform in people’s gender stereotypes?
A additional immediate way to find evidence for the causal notion would be to do experiments in which we would statistically manipulate the form of phrase designs (linguistic data) that a man or woman was currently being exposed to—and then measure their ensuing psychological gender stereotypes. If it does prove to be legitimate that some of our gender stereotypes are shaped by language, will that effect in any way impede people’s means to transform them?
I imagine the opposite, in fact. I imagine this operate tells us just one mechanism whereby stereotypes are shaped. And I imagine this provides us a trace of how we could perhaps intervene and, ultimately, transform people’s stereotypes. So I have another entire body of operate seeking at children’s guides and measuring the implicit stereotypes in [all those] texts. And there we find that stereotypes are even bigger than the kinds that we report in our paper. Just one promising upcoming route is modifying which guides are currently being browse to children—or which electronic media are currently being supplied to kids. And that might alter the stereotypes made.
