“Within the previous yr or so the merest glimpse has been obtained of the universe as discovered by the quite-substantial-electricity photons termed gamma rays. The glimpse has been supplied by fewer than 100 energetic photons, recorded by a gamma ray ‘telescope’ carried into orbit on April 27, 1961, by the artificial satellite Explorer XI. It is uncertain whether or not such a small range of particles have ever prior to been analyzed so intensively in an energy to extract facts about the universe. The evaluation is nevertheless continuing in a laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technologies.”
